Austen Allred added,
I think it's a "We ripped the bandaid off and are now reaping dividends", where the bandaid was "URLs are adequate for technologists and powerusers but an EXTREMELY BAD UX for everyone else" and this would be more obvious to US techies if they looked like https://xn--v8jza4bl8i0bm8414fkqffw1a1gddy1mufaz8u.com日本語読めるなら対象外ですが.com
The other pattern that I see a lot is [ Our Company Keyword ] [Search] where the keyword is chosen to uniquely identify a company-controlled purpose-created page or mini-site.
But years after deciding "Making a poster? Put a QR code on that, otherwise nobody will visit the associated site." and training users how to access it at every e.g. McDonalds in Japan, industry said "Wait a minute we can dynamically generate these bwahahaha."
