This is my periodic reminder that a substantial portion of all value I've created in my career is downstream of making it very easy for people to contact me and explicitly soliciting it. It's so easy to execute on it's practically cheating.

Let's see if I got this right using the translation feature: 1. false equivalence, 2. condescension, and 3. unnecessary pretentiousness (seriously, why else would you reply to a fellow native English speaker in Japanese?) I'll take it as a "no"

I too have lived in Japan. The fact that I was occasionally treated by an outsider gave me the slightest hint of what people who do not look like me have to deal with all the time. But. I was never materially hurt in any way, shape, or form. It's not the same thing at all.

This was a disappointing response to a legitimate concern. Is it so hard to imagine that making oneself easily available to contact is often not a safe choice? If your advice is only helpful to a small privileged population and harmful to others then maybe it's not so great.

It's also different than having to deal with unwanted romantic/sexual attention and sexual harassment within a professional setting or community. Many people would probably receive both types of unwanted contact if they followed this advice. :(
