There are many founders who’d far rather run the business than take Google’s shilling. I’d likely be one of them. But stakeholders should understand what other stakeholders’ BATNA is to continuing the business.

How much do you have to pay such a person, though? If the founder is keeping $3-600k in a sustainable business, don't GooFace have to offer $1MM salary/bonus plus $2-5MM (deferred?) signing bonus just to hire that guy? Do they really hire people at the salary?

They wouldn’t bat an eye at $1-2m/yr total comp for a Director-level role. A high-performing VP could make $10-30m/yr.
