Make your New Years resolution to learn Chinese! I can easily say it’s been the highest ROI thing I’ve done in my life by an absurd margin. Here’s how: https://medium.com/@wheatpond/its-probably-time-to-learn-chinese-63587376c2d2 …

@kevinakwok - you don't speak Chinese? @wheatpond you forget you get extra bonus points for speaking Chinese 因为你老外 ie the non Chinese person extra points scheme. Chinese people on the other hand, very rarely get bonus points for speaking another language.

I always found it amusing that people in Tokyo would speak Japanese to Shan and then persist in being slightly annoyed even when she’s like uhh I’m Chinese and live in America so...

In case peanut gallery wants it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=oLt5qSm9U80 … (All friends I have in Japan who speak Japanese and do not plausibly look Japanese have a love/hate relationship with this sketch, which is very, very on the nose.)

@roman_gollent has a different version of it from approaching counter staff - he describes it as the visible look/sag of relief when they realize he speaks Japanese. Ironically, his hapu kids speak decent (Singapore) Mandarin.

White papers have been written on the above mentioned phenomenon. I've experienced the dichotomy as well. There've been instances where my wife would "translate" for me. I'd speak Japanese to a Japanese person and she'd repeat, verbatim, what I just said and add "って"...
