Amazon's "pick up from a locker" delivery experience seems pretty good on website end. (It seems unlikely that "Hope to get a package synchronously from a driver, scheduled days in advance on a best-effort basis" will be the final form of last-quarter-mile in the US.)

Mailrooms are historically cost centers subsidized out of the fat, fat margins of professional services businesses and financial firms, but the frequency of use for Amazon specifically & the cost of duplicate truck rolls probably makes it beneficial for them to subsidize broadly.
