Amazon's "pick up from a locker" delivery experience seems pretty good on website end. (It seems unlikely that "Hope to get a package synchronously from a driver, scheduled days in advance on a best-effort basis" will be the final form of last-quarter-mile in the US.)

Mailrooms are historically cost centers subsidized out of the fat, fat margins of professional services businesses and financial firms, but the frequency of use for Amazon specifically & the cost of duplicate truck rolls probably makes it beneficial for them to subsidize broadly.

In France, the packages were delivered to my local supermarket, that was a very good compromise for me.

Apartment/condo complexes can also outsource their package receive function to Amazon with the Locker Hub which is carrier/seller agnostic https://www.amazon.com/b?node=17337376011 …

Does that program actively accept new customers? We'd certainly pay for it if they would sell it to us...

I don't know about the US but here in Canada your building can get a Canada Post locker, which can be used to recieve packages. The mailman delivers the package into one of the slots in the locker, locks it with a key and then delivers the key to your mailbox.

Yes, that works great until the union goes on strike. Unfortunately those lockers aren't available to other delivery agents.

There's also new use cases. I had a layover in FLL and had a last minute item I wanted for my trip. Bought it on Amazon shipped to a locker near the airport and picked up during my layover. That's not something I could do with a mailroom
