Great anecdote and nice strategy! Related thought: This has psychological armor almost like renegotiating your existing salary when you've already been accepted for a perfect job offer elsewhere. Implicitly separates external fears from the fears involved in the actual task.
-
Hard to talk to and negotiate well w/ a customer when your mind is fixated on "if this call doesn't work then the start-up might not work which means large parts of my life ???" versus "This call is to see if this potential customer would find shared value in this proposal" :)

Have you ever written on cold calling advice for engineers?

So cool! Mind sharing the off-site agenda? Would love the inspiration

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an 'offsite'? And what is a 'verbal'?
-
Offsite - a team meeting, not at the office. Verbal - verbal commitment, often to a sale
