“Engineers don’t do ethics courses and this is why Silicon Valley...” is a classist slur designed to reallocate social status between engineers and virtuous paragons like journalists, MBAs, legislators, health insurance executives, lawyers, and others who take ethics classes.

Respectfully disagree. Classism is a system by which the elite justify their exercise of power, by delegitimizing the use of power by classes other then themselves, and by using control of e.g. economic power enact barriers to entry ($140k degree, etc) into e.g. social power.

engineers, as a job title — not a class — are not, on the whole, lower on the totem pole or even slightly downtrodden. they wield huge power. those other job titles you mentioned also need ethics training. the argument doesn’t make sense.

of course a software engineer would misunderstand "classes" to mean something else

No. They are AN elite. There are others with different powers.

Software engineering is unusual in that it is often welcoming to the self-taught.

Class is a power structure & while wealth has a LOT to do with it (& software engineers are not poor) that wealth only matters when acting as structural power(like say wealthy enough to exploit someone vs poor enough to have to be exploited). Who has power over Silicon Valley?

You are using classism to mean a class of people. Apparently, that is not allowed, it can only mean economic class instead of structural power class :/ that said, CS are the ones who implement the evil so they need lots of ethics training to not create the tools that do the evil

The PERFECT example of this is how "the media" (ie traditional TV and newspapers) are constantly wringing their hands over Facebook and Twitter, but don't gave a damn about Fox News, even though Fox has been so much more destructive to our politics...

My God this is such a daft hill to die on. This is just facetiously misappropriating leftist argumentation to screech about your own perceived victimhood. Grow up, friend. Conflict is not abuse. Stuff like this makes you lose credibility. With respect.
