“Requiring a particular university course isn’t classism!” See the problem with general education requirements is that there is a risk, however slight, that a student is awake during them, and as I was I can report that this is not what the academy has to say on the matter.

that's not what classism means

-
Respectfully disagree. Classism is a system by which the elite justify their exercise of power, by delegitimizing the use of power by classes other then themselves, and by using control of e.g. economic power enact barriers to entry ($140k degree, etc) into e.g. social power.

Being required to take a course on ethics is one of the big differences between real Engineers and fake "Software Engineers". That said, some professions seem to take ethics courses as providing examples of what they can get away with rather than things they should not do.
-
Is this a Canadian thing? None of the engineering schools I attended (for RealEngineering™) required an ethics course.

i did biz school for undergrad. the one salient memory from our biz law/ethics class was the vocal minority that argued quite vehemently in favor of insider trading

The point of having a class is that there's a rubric and framework for discussing ethics and everyone is introduced to it, not that it guarantee that everyone will behave ethically. Additionally journalism schools embed values and ethics in far more than a single class.
-
Additionally you will find many folks in journalism who do not have a Journalism degree, so your point is pretty muddled on that one too. I never thought I'd find myself defending journalism education (which is indeed classiest and flawed) but here we are.

Engineering could use more ethical influence and understanding. That's not classism by any stretch. So many examples of the negative societal impact from ethically poor decisions made by firms dominated by engineers. Everyone has room for improvement.

Lawyers take ethics courses so they are invariably ethical. Discuss...
