I get asked why I don’t have a patreon or some other way for people to send $$ if they want. It’s because my business intuition tells me that’s a bad idea. If people want to support me they can refer established tech companies to my business. Not sure why this is my intuition yet

yes that’s it — CEOs don’t take tips. i used to have a tip jar on my old site back when i was an employee then consultant, before i had anything to sell. i would never do it today

I can kind of feel intuitively why “CEOs don’t take tips” would make sense, but wish I understood it enough to explain why

A thing I say when spontaneously offered is "Consider donating the same amount extra the next time you donate to a charity of your choice, and think of me when you do it. That will make me more happy than the money will, and help someone who needs it."

Also, to be Machiavellian: You are better off letting that deferred reciprocity stew for months or years until they see a way to refer real business to you. It's the same "cost' to them ($10 tip vs. mentioning "oh, Patrick does that) but the latter is 100x to u.

somebody did this to me too!! i told him he could join our group and pay for one of the pizzas instead

That's a good deflection. (Sidenote but not entirely unrelated: class-inflected social norms about who pays for food and drinks are another minefield, particularly for folks who come to whatever our social class is later in life.)

Oh god that story is making me cringe so hard. Was the vibe old-grandpa-giving-cash or something much worse?
-
Just "Oh I'm such a fan of your work. Here, take some money." "... That's not something I do. Glad you like the work." "Really you can have it." "It would cause me headaches, international taxes etc etc, maybe just give it to charity and think of me." Poorly calibrated, not bad.

That's the right move. "Cash tips" can often be mistaken for bribes.

I had no idea this was a thing. It sounds about as awkward as a bribe.
