"The act of invention may simply be making conscious, explicit, and regular what has been done for a considerable time unconsciously or by accident." Elting Morison in https://www.amazon.com/Men-Machines-Modern-Times-Press/dp/0262529319 …, which is a great book.

@jessitron at#yow18 described doing this via automation as "getting the knowledge out of my head and into the world". Learn things, teach the computer to do them on your behalf, garbage collect that brain space for something more useful.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

In making process/tools explicit you also benefit from exposing inefficiencies previously obscured by their implicit nature. This creates enduring value and lays a foundation for future improvement

What are some ways you’ve seen others do this?

I've heard of consultants who basically do this at the firm level. They go in, and talk to ppl and take notes. Then they describe back to the business how it actually operates. -- So I think the pattern is so basic it can be used many diff ways.

Clocks were only able to become commonplace in the 16th-17th century thanks to this pattern. The cutting equipment previously required lots of craftsmanship, but as soon as they began to embody those principles/skills, they were able to scale.

Tools like
