Corporate purchasing and policies make funding open source Literally Impossible. Nothing’s going to change until you make them pay you. Someone filed a bug? Support contract. Someone wants a feature? Support contract. It’s literally easier to pay you $1500/yr than $25 once.

I think it is unlikely that most companies in the US would ask to see your incorporation documents, says somebody who sees lots of incorporation documents. W-9, vendor qualification for enterprise. Following virtually universal: * don't call it a donation * invoice / PO / check

The physics of money **do in fact** make it easier for a line engineer or tier 1 manager to authorize a $X,000 license purchase or support contract than to p-card $25 for a donation.

Neither wire transfers nor fax machines are particularly common requirements in the US. You presenting like this is not the first time you have ever sold software in your life is a pretty useful thing, though, if you're selling to a purchasing department.

Acceptable pushback to a Purchasing request: "Do you have a de minimis threshhold or expedited process rather than going through Vendor Qualification? Not acceptable pushback to a Purchasing request: "#%()# you I will not go through Vendor Qualification."

It strikes me that a SaaS product that hand-holds people through as much of the selling-to-corporates frustration as possible could have a huge impact here. Sounds like a good fit for @stripe :)

But this is exactly the place where open source culture can, actually, accept a liaison, no? Someone who will go through VQ and such like processes for a percentage. Ultimately, there's not TOO much different processes you have to learn to become one.

The problem are the opportunity cost. Pricing it in is good but money come later. I need to eat now. Until we fix that, someone that only have 2h/w to spend on their FOSS project will not easily do it.

The inefficiencies inherent in established business practices are mind boggling. Companies willing to pay up to 10x the actual cost just so a vendor will accommodate their bureaucratic bullshit... but it’s a requirement if you want to play the game. 🤷‍♂️
