There's a nice little section in https://www.amazon.com/Bullshit-Jobs-Theory-David-Graeber/dp/150114331X … about how so many devs do "duct taping" together of OSS for paid employment, then develop OSS during their off time because it is a more fulfilling use of their skills. Can try to find & transcribe if you're interested.
