Broadly speaking the reason people care about efficiency is that it measures the gap between your values and your outcomes, and because in a competition between efficient and inefficient agents the efficient agents get their preferences satisfied by default.

This doesn't universally increase efficiency if there's value in following a path and learning certain things in a certain order. Leveraged options trading wouldn't be the first financial thing I taught someone, for example.
