When designing travel / expense policies for your startup, I would strongly encourage you to include the option "[Your manager / purchasing / the founder] has a purchasing card and business travel is an appropriate use for it; we're happy to book tickets / hotels for you."

Make this especially clear to college candidates! If they didn't have professional-class parents they may not understand the norms of who-pays-what on business trips, even when flying out for an interview. Say up front that you're covering costs and they won't be on the hook.

I've heard stories of new grad candidates declining interviews because they assumed they'd have to pay for the flight.

completely agree! and for those expenses that the candidate does pay out of pocket (parking at home airport, meals, ground transportation) make it ridiculously easy to submit expenses and be fast with reimbursements.

I've also found that newer employees will pick the most inexpensive options where possible, to the detriment of the trip. For example, picking a flight with a 4 hour layover and showing up tired from travel vs getting a direct flight w/ good seats and showing up ready to go.
