(A difference in expectations in American and Japanese cultures: Americans expect to be extremely specific about their preferences and be very open to hearing specific preferences. Japanese people largely expect to be vague and to intuit preferences. This leads to fun both ways.)

(Can’t fail to repeat the great observation from the book Making Common Sense of Japan that this is not universal in either place and that e.g. mid-ranking American military officers do exactly the same to high ranking officers, at a degree of skill which surprised Japanese ppl.)
