Can I recommend @Tarsnap? ;-)

I use it, too, but Tarsnap doesn't allow me to push a button on a new Mac and have my old Mac in a shiny new aluminum body like having an onsite backup does.

Kid pictures, man. Kid pictures.

That is probably the literal answer, given that all of mine go to Dropbox (and are synced to the MBP) and also go on my phone, which gets encrypted, opaque, non-deduplicable backups made to the MBP.

Could be from to how OS X stores snapshot backups locally and then syncs all of them? tmutil could tell you how many local snapshots you have and how big they are if memory serves me. Can also show approximately when you suddenly jumped in data size maybe?

I often see mine backing up over 30gb, and it does it several times a day. How much Ruby code can one person write in a half a day?

You have it set up to back up your photos, your videos, and your downloads. Exclude the ~/Downloads and the ~/Photos folder, and I bet it plummets to like 20 gigabytes.
