Been thinking a bit about how skewed our perception of “rich” has become. So, curious... Who was the richest person you, or your family, knew when you were a kid? How did they make their money? And, with the benefit of hindsight, how much do you think they were really worth?

Both of these were “unfathomably wealthy” by my expectations / view of the world at the time. I remember thinking in university that if I ever got to $100k in an engineering job (which I expected to happen around age 50) it would be highest in my peer group by lots.

(One can probably predict, given this sketch of my financial background, what happened in university when I met people who likely believed themselves to be "comfortably middle class" who e.g. bought $6k of furniture for their apartment and gave it to friends after a semester.)
