I was literally thinking the other day how massive failed IT projects don't happen the same way. But then I realized massive failed IT projects were all about shipping code, and that not working. I think we stopped expecting to be able to install The Google into The Not Google.

Yes, we're better at what we do ship, but I think code stays closer to its authors in many situations. I think the point of open source to some extent is not depending on the original authors if your business depends on the code.

Connected to the observation (anecdotal) that startups are becoming less about the ability to make software that works. 10-20 years ago that was a massive competitive advantage. Now, less so.

A lot of commodity tools available. At this point it's not so hard to find very competent technical team too. My point of pain is typically lack of agile methodology on client side. Especially in bigger affairs.
