A thing I don't think has been remarked upon enough: Using email to distribute 2FA codes for logins to e.g. banks is a choice to outsource to Google detecting anomalous activity (e.g. hacked accounts / reused passwords). Probably not wrong that Google has comparative advantage.

Yes and no. I've been hosting email since the early 90s, and getting 80% of the way there is easier than ever. The hard 20% is much harder, but that's due to spam/anti-spam complications. (And MIME. Nobody understands MIME.)
