What is something important and obvious about a place once you’ve been there that you couldn’t have easily learned (or at least didn’t) just from reading about it?

I have a feeling that there is a class of unremarkable insights about boring things there, fish-in-water style. Tokyoites don’t understand that they order their lives around the best infrastructure in the world. Chicago neighborhoods are dense kin networks.
