Pro-tip: literally no one should have their only email address be one tied to their employment, even if it is at a company you own. Your desire to remember conversations and access retirement accounts will outlive your association with most institutions.https://twitter.com/devonzuegel/status/1058217280289427456 …

Note that if a startup is sold or goes under you can very easily lose your mail spool. (Also note that migrating them even between GSuites accounts is a nightmare.)

Until the Catholic Church starts offering email accounts I think it is the closest thing on the market.

And from a security perspective, once I have your email, I own you. I hit every bank, brokerage, mobile carrier, ecommerce site, etc for reset password. Poof. Gone. And if someone cashes out your 401k, IRA, etc you lost your life savings *and* get the tax bill later #FML

Exactly. Something is extremely fucked up with the status quo (Which benefits Silicon Valley data harvesters immensely) when your life is protected only by the might of your password. That's some bullshit right there.

Good thing to remember when signing up for Health benefits and payroll - use your personal email address.

I registered http://anserinae.net  two days after I graduated from college when I realized that my .edu address was going to expire and take 4+ years of email with it. Lesson learned, I now assume the same expiration is possible with "free email" over the longer term.

My next trick is going to be migrating 15+ years of my wife's personal correspondence over to the family domain from gmail. The kids (3 and 1) are both already set up. Totally worth the $200 or so I spend every year on registrations and cloud providers.

the email address you use for account management/recovery also shouldnt be your personal communications email address for security reasons

Your pro-tip was discovered by IT Professionals 15 years ago, at least. Contacts/Calendars/Messages=what we used to call PIM before the consumer providers captured that segment and made everyone think it was special & not standardized
