For those of us who don't automatically attract email, shotgunning emails and starting conversations about topics of common interest is also startlingly effective.

I've been dribbling a couple of emails out every week over the last couple of years. It turns out that the depth of conversations you can have with people increases drastically once you get off Hackernews or Twitter. Create safe spaces, and people will talk. Who knew?

This is so true. Strategies are often identified and disclosed in hindsight and turn out to be something that worked in given circumstaces by (a) given person(s), because of who they were, how they saw things, and what they would do about it.
