Hat tip @gwern for convincing me to do so. We were at a gathering with a bunch of people who are broadly interested in public policy but, sensibly from the perspective of English-speakers, had never heard of this.

One way to create value is by having new thoughts, but I find that's entirely too much work, so basically I just find a good one somewhere where simple osmotic pressure won't get it adopted somewhere else and then tell people about it. (Joking but not joking.)

thanks for this great and enlightening article! as an avid anime fan, i feel like this somewhat explains a spate of works that seem to promote the rural areas nowadays.

I think if you watch credits closely you’ll see a bit of the reasons for that. Lots of money in cultural promotion these days.

Fascinating idea. This deserves a wider audience, and a journalist to help you edit it for non policy wonks. Can you clarify this: "if you “donate” ~3% of your gross salary to one of these cities... they will give you ~1.5% of it back in all-but-cash." What do they get back?
-
Give a city a $5k donation; they will give you $2.5k of gift cards.

Wow , best idea I have read all year. This just blows my mind - the complexity of societies and complex system interactions evolving a simple thing into a thing of beauty

Thanks, neat post! Suggestion: replace "non-normative" with something clearer. Unusual/abnormal? Or is it a punk rock damn-the-system move?
