Very boring thoughts re: http://www.ycombinator.com/topcompanies/ 1) It's refreshing to see a list of anything that isn't spread over 10 pages to optimize for CPMs. 2) It is a <table> which looks good. This is still surprising for me to see anywhere, even in 2018. Why is that?

It's clever in how it uses blocks of text and whitespace to create the impression of a grid even though all of the vertical grid lines are missing. Information design is an art.

Have you read Edward Tufte’s books? They gave me an appreciation for good display of information.

Proper use of the Gestalt Principles. One can find lots of great tips on designing tables in Stephen Few's "Show Me the Numbers" http://www.perceptualedge.com/library.php

Tables and typesetting are tricky. Key point: what looks good in this article will not always look right. The key is the correct density for the topic in question, IMO. People will complain about formatting in academic papers, but to the initiated, it doesn't get better.
-
I also kind of think the correct density / breadth of a table will vary depending on the audience. Which sucks, because that means there is no global optimum. However, as expertise increases, one also tends to desire lower density info with higher entropy / information exchange.
