What are examples of open source projects whose importance/value is not matched by financial support, i.e. are underfunded? One is zlib, which handles worldwide compression and yet afaik is maintained by a single dude who likely plans to retire soon

nginx has a commercial entity behind it AFAIK. They sell Nginx Plus as well as consulting services. https://www.nginx.com/products/nginx/ Agreed on all the others. The sustainability of FOSS is pretty dire.

libjpg (http://ijg.org/ ), openssh is pretty well supported but not in proportion to how much depends on it, IMHO.

IJG is run by a guy randomly adding stuff to the library and pretty much everybody is using libjpeg-turbo nowadays and it would be great to have a stable funding for the project.

Looks like Nginx has a well-funded corporate overlord (at least based on their careers page): https://www.nginx.com/careers/current-openings/ …
