Outside of the Civil War, has the US ever been so divided? How did Americans repair the rift after that war? How long did it take? The level of animosity between Reps & Dems is unreal. Hard to imagine people putting aside their differences. It truly feels like a post-fact world.

I do think social media exposes these rifts and makes them feel much more acute. 20 years ago you'd watch a news report but you wouldn't see comments from individual people who disagreed with you. The latter is powerful (and depressing). - 1 more reply

Don't forget that people used to visit Congress in DC as entertainment. It wasn't uncommon for fist dights to break out and people would come to watch the "show." It is easy to assume that the US has survived due to unity rather than despite the lack of it.
