Quoting inbox (per their approval): > A few uncomfortable conversations later and I got myself a free $10k in equity and $20k in sign-on bonus! That's about my salary in year 1 of my engineering career, just for saying "That offer is interesting. Can you do better?"

what do you think their total cost per year was to keep you employed?
-
Hmm... $50k to $60k or so. (The differential is half the same overheads one would have in the US and half overtime pay and bonus, neither of which are guaranteed guaranteed but both of which would have been reasonably considered components of the offer.)

What you thought wages were in the midwest is not far off from what wages are in Vancouver, Canada (based on the current USDCAD exchange rate). I know software developers with 10+ years experience who lead 20+ member teams... and earn under $80k USD/year w/o any equity grants.

And they were. That's roughly what I was paid at a good firm in the Midwest out of college. Difference being that most of our salaryman friends are still paid shit, especially considering overtime whereas the market has more clearly responded in the US

Growing up in and starting my career in Kansas, I can attest to these being realistic numbers.
