I think that has basically happened but we’re not super honest about it yet. (Is there a 10X dynamic range in salaries between Python programmers in SF? Yes, trivially. Between Python programmers at Google? *cough* Yes. *cough*)

haha, definitely your wheelhouse. but 10x salaries? I don’t think so. compensation, maybe. I think as a trope it’s just that

Yeah, agreed that it is about comp packages not salaries. Disagree that that is a material distinction; a vested Google RSU is all but cash.

And indeed the unpredictability of how stock price goes over a vesting schedule is evidence in favor of the trope, because nobody says 10X to mean “not 9X and not 11X.” AppAmaGooBookSoft print a lot of offers where their year 1 cost is “I dunno $Y plus or minus $600k? Whatevs.”

So that’s true, and my initial tweet was kinda tongue in cheek. But the main thing I was getting at is that “10x engineer” is all OVER the place (in different nomenclature), but no one talks about the financial side of it. It’s weird, and shady, really. Predictable, tho.

I'm sure there is a standard distribution with that. so the 10x my be at the 99% percentile, which may mean they are the employee version of Unicorns. You may just never run into one AND know how much they make.

I just had lunch with the founder of a 10 year old startup. His former prof was casually talking about donating millions to his old college.
