a few folks have mentioned that $10 USD is really expensive/unaffordable in some countries. has anyone seen good approaches to dealing with this?

Me if you want a somewhat quixotic example. Most "public intellectuals" are broadly in the same ballpark, where their output is generally widely available at $0 (or very slightly above for books) and the things they actually charge for are $gadzooks.

Maybe what conferences do? People can pay more X into the price of the magazine so that other people that can’t pay can get a free one? Just an idea.

Another bit of insight from selling stuff including to people who had *really* low means. Asking for a discount is a mental barrier (adjust for culture here) so asking for a discount is sufficient proof for needing a discount, so automatically approved.
