Quoted with permission: "I've been a fan of yours for some time, ever since I doubled my rates, doubled them again, and have been still so busy that I'm turning down work. I'm too chicken to double my rates again, because it seems obscene." (My advice was to charge more.)

If you feel aesthetically unpleasant about asking for too much money and you're aesthetically OK with a company soaking up the surplus, I won't try to convince you to have different aesthetics... but have you considered owning a company? It's surprisingly easy.

What about non technical work?

A lawyer charging $4k a day in six minute increments is, basically, Tuesday.

Back when I was in a dept that sold bill-by-the-day consulting to corporate customers, I realized that while we charged too way much for just grunt work (even though some customers needed that), telling them "Don't do X, it would be a mistake" can be worth arbitrarily much.

Telling customers "Do Y, it'll work out well for you, here's how" is satisfying, sometimes highly profitable for them, but telling them not to do subtly dumb things, or being the politically neutral outsider hired to tell them not to do obviously dumb things, was valuable.

Maybe these figures seem crazy because the context and specifics are often left out of these kinds of tweets. What kind of company was being pitched? How often do these opportunities come up? What are the outcomes for the client? What situation is the client trying to escape?

$800 a day is $100/hour, or ~$200k/year. Lots of folks make that or more in base salary. A good consultant should easily be able to bill twice that or more… Sounds like we both know folks at $500/hour…
-
Just my impressions, but seems there are a couple "magic number" breaking points. Basically $100/$250/$300, the big range between first two seems less scrutinized. The $500/hour mark is a bit past what I've seen in longer term engagements unless considering a leveraging model.
