An exaggeration but not all that much of one: Most programmers in Tokyo would be better off if they learned English and immigrated to San Francisco, and most programmers in San Francisco would be better off if they learned Japanese and immigrated to Tokyo.

How much of your data is really just that it turns out immigrants have carefully considered their choices before committing?

Sample size of one plus most of my friends but much like choice of marriage partner or career I think immigration is less a carefully considered choice and more a series of accidents and microchoices over a period of years.
