An exaggeration but not all that much of one: Most programmers in Tokyo would be better off if they learned English and immigrated to San Francisco, and most programmers in San Francisco would be better off if they learned Japanese and immigrated to Tokyo.

That this doesn’t happen on next Tuesday is, depending on your point of view, a market failure, a demonstration of how much friction matters, or an answer to “What wouldn’t I give to triple my salary?” / “What wouldn’t I give to live in an urbanist close-to-eutopia?”

Why? What exactly would improve for people in SF who relocated to Tokyo? What exactly would improve for people in Tokyo who relocated to SF?

“Have you ever wanted to live in a city which exudes functioning? With reasonable prices, any cultural or culinary or similar thing you could desire, absence of an industry monoculture? Where you’d genuinely enjoy all your nights and weekends and your friends would be envious?”

Is there a generalization that this is an instance of?

There’s the old saw “The grass is greener on the other side” but given a multidimensional preference space and different values that can actually be true.

Sou desu ka ...so is anybody hiring for non-salaryman-hours security jobs?

I presume AppAmaGooBookSoft all have security teams in Japan and would expect their office culture to be pretty close to the motherships', but don't have an inside track on that. Think working conditions for security roles in startups would likely be hit or miss. Lots of banks.

Are you back in the USA? If so, do you count as USA-> Japan or Japan-> USA? or did it go up dramatically every time you crossed the Pond?

I live in Tokyo and have lived continuously in Japan for 15 years. I have some non-trivial measure of professional connection to SF, where I have never lived.

Is this true for individuals assuming the rest didn't (relative advantage), or for the whole cohort of Tokyo + SF programmers swapping places?

I think substantially every individual I know who has made this trade *in either direction* either re-ups for it every year or regrets the circumstances that resulted in them being unable to continue it, though my social circles might bias my POV here.
