Well they definitely don't expose the interns to added responsibility, which is about the same level of involvement as shadowing existing employees.

My context: I've been the "shadowee" for both interns and probationary hires. The interns had no real incentive to learn anything (quite a few were just doing it because it was a requirement they had to get through). It's the people that saw a career there that engaged.
