Is that the right number? Is that the right goal? Does it accomplish your terminal goals? (If you had $4 million in your bank account *right now*, would you actually spend it on the ~$200k/year annuity you can probably buy or would you immediately sign over to charity, etc.)

also even hard-acquired self-knowledge can be deceiving! it's not necessarily obvious that an ex ante `this will be miserable` thing will actually be miserable. and our ego is pretty good at constructing narratives in which whatever we did was the right thing anyways
