Would you choose to be absolutely miserable for 3 years (working all the time, bad work environment, stress, no time for friends or family, bad sleep/health) if it meant getting enough money to never need to work again the rest of your life once you’re done? [poll]

I probably would have agreed to that in a second at age 24; I'd be much more reticent about it now. Partly my BATNAs are improved, partly I'm in a position of responsibility with respect to my family, partly I have less health to spend, and partly I have less uncertainty about $.

The other part of the answer for me might or might not be relevant to you, but if someone said "I want to trade stupendous amounts of money in return for you being utterly miserable" to me, I would say "I buy that you will factually be able to produce the utterly miserable part."

(You can credibly offer someone shedloads of money, but if you're also offering pain explicitly, my prior expectation of successfully delivering the money goes way down. People who can deterministically award huge amounts of money don't typically ask for pain in return for it.)

P.S. Peanut gallery: even organizations which credibly offer shedloads of money do not result in shedloads of money getting collected 100% of the time; there are a lot of ways for deals to go south, one reasons why you will happily pay lawyers to reduce your risk in these deals.

A random bit of advice: if you're considering making an extreme tradeoff "Would I take $4 million to [REALLY BAD OUTCOME]" a perhaps useful question is "I want $4 million; what am I not doing right now which would result in me getting it?"

This might suggest other ways to get what you want other than going through the really bad outcome, or asking it independently of the concrete offer on the table might clarify your thinking about values. "Wait a second: do I even care about $4 million?"
