Some years ago, my software got posted to a Chinese warez forum complete with hotlinked screenshots. For unaccountable reasons my Nginx config soon started replacing those screenshots with freetaiwan.jpg That fixed that.https://twitter.com/WilliamYang120/status/1037130002729332736 …

Hmm, I'll have to disagree with you on this one Patrick. Steam's existence caused piracy numbers to plummet years before companies even knew microtransactions could be a thing. Steam and GoG simply provide a better service than torrents.

Lifetime updates, no weird bugs due to the cracking process, game-saves uploaded to the cloud, hassle-free multiplayer, no virus threats, cross-platform play, the list goes on. Steam is so convenient that people buy games on Humble Bundle and use them on Steam.

I highly disagree with the gaming example. Gamers don't complain about microtransactions etc. in free/fair games (see: Warframe), but do take offense when these things are part of a AAA 60+ bucks full priced game, that comes out and has a paid DLC at day one or somesuch BS.

I think it has more to do with app stores than that, there are automated gui tools that patch out the calls to payments apis (eg: luckypatcher). it's easier than software cracking was back in the day

also with integrated payments on mobile operating systems the sort of games that used to be shareware are more profitable than the sort of games that used to be sold in stores
