@patio11, re your "Standing Invitation," have you tried a pay-for-response system? Or would this result in too-large an obligation? (Admittedly, I ask because I recently emailed you, and would gladly pay your opinion on my specific situation.)

I've never tried it and am reasonably sure that I wouldn't. Basically, my rate card has two entries: free and very, very expensive. I want to preserve an option for people who can't afford "very, very expensive"; it's socially valuable + they often go on to interesting things.

What I do *not* want to do is commit myself to the disutility of paid work for far-below-my-actual-rate, which will disproportionately cause me to work on far-below-my-actual-pay-grade problems. (Will look for your email later; this is an answer to the general strategy question)

(I'd be remiss if I didn't note that I am presently employed by company founded by people who know me precisely because I had a reputation for being willing to talk software with literally anybody even if my business was bigger than their business. Their business grew nicely.)
