By referring to donations as a business model I had in mind the kind of work nonprofits do to secure donations— campaigns, marketing, thinking of what people can “get” or see in return, 1:1 meetings with potential donors, networking, pitches, strategy.

Any time I see a donation button I think “they’re not serious about an exchange of value” And maybe I’m old-fashioned but accepting donations is only acceptable if you’re a registered charity

I would argue a lot of programmers, starting out on their own after a career in s/w corps have a aesthetic objection to doing business if only in the way they’ve seen it. Getting over it is step 1 to becoming an entrepreneur.
