I think this is neatly resolved by the observation that whether an act constitutes emotional labor as defined by people who use the phrase "emotional labor" depends a lot more on relationship between parties and speaker's affinity than it depends on the act itself.

e.g. I think most people who use the phrase "emotional labor" would consider an upper middle class white male software developer and an upper middle class white male project manager to not be doing it while having a conversation about quarterly goals and professional development.
