Some of this is also historical. Seattle only had Microsoft for a long time (Amazons growth didn’t accelerate until only a few years ago). This provided a steady supply of tenured and experienced engineers without a saturated market of startups.

Microsoft was the biggest reason why companies set up offices here in Seattle starting around 2010. It took a while but now there’s a much bigger diversity of employers for the tech scene. Experienced engineers don’t want to move now - they’ve got families and backyards.
