Though God knows I've seen people just say "What's the budget?" and immediately get it.

$FOO, but that your menu includes e.g. downscoped versions which they'd also get value from, including at least one in budget.Show this thread -
You can also (advanced tactic) ask how the budget was arrived upon and what they need from you to get this moved into another budget, rebudgeted, etc.

Bigger (enterprise) budgets and clear ROI generally have well-defined expectations and know what to aim for. It's the cheapskates and small-time shops that want everything for $500 that tend to dodge in my experience.

Works both ways. Recently my company hired a contractor with a too good to be true budget. Turns out, they vastly underestimated the complexity (despite several warnings) and delivered unusable crap.

I think it also helps keep them grounded in reality, when looking for expert professional services - as they often have a very unrealistic view of what it costs to get things done. Not all, but some I’ve run into for sure. Also helps manages the expectations once approved.
