My operating theory is that some people go into English Mode and try to parse then come switch back to Japanese when they realize they had the wrong parser loaded, and this clears the buffer. (A similar thing happens to me if spoken to in Japanese while thinking in English.)

My wife and coworkers know that deep in a code haze is the absolute worst time to try hard questions like “What would you like for lunch?” because it usually comes out “... *verbal static* A question. Asked. Sorry, you just asked me a question. Could you ask it again?”
