I have a whole host of "dammit, I wish I had this" services that I think expats would enjoy. First up: upload a letter to a site and have someone in the US send it registered. Just because we're abroad doesn't mean our lives in the US have ceased to exist.

Although my accountant/lawyer friends would rush to assure me that "I'm not paying $600/hour for them to count - I'm paying that much because their decades of experience counting days means they know at what number to stop."

That could be because there is no such thing as a 183 day "presence test" for self employed people. For most of the EU you are supposed to start paying tax on the day you arrive.
