Being a foreigner in
Japan means you will always be treated as a second-class citizen, that’s why it’s such a terrible place for nomads (but still great for tourists) https://www.quora.com/Do-you-agree-with-the-view-that-life-and-work-for-foreigners-is-difficult-in-Japan …https://twitter.com/LeWagonTokyo/status/1019438727628640256 …

Foreigners in
Japan have challenges unlike any other place:
- You can’t rent an apartment on your name (you’re a foreigner!)
- You can’t get a mobile phone subscription (did you remember you’re a foreigner?)
- Japanese politics is right-wing and explicitly against foreigners8 replies 3 retweets 20 likesShow this thread -
This stuff isn’t well known and most of the word is a Japan fanboy, I get it, sakura trees are nice. And yes it’s a lovely place to visit. But something has to change there.

inb4 “you’re European, this is how you treat refugees”, yep indeed very similar

I don’t identify as a nomad (and probably not as an expat, though rest of world might not care what I have to say about that). The situation is more complex than “Japan hates foreigners”, “Japan is a (racial/ethnic) monoculture” and similar capture.

I would not advise technically inclined people who want to build a business to do so in Japan unless that desire is concomitant with also wanting to make an *enormous* expenditure of effort on figuring out how to exist here. Language is biggest barrier; far from only one.

Food’s good. Internet is reliable. Prices are reasonable by first world standards. Tokyo may well be the world’s most livable city. All cultures are complicated; Japan’s culture has a lot of parts which are very likeable.

Pretty sure you can rent apartments and get a phone as a foreigner though, you might just need to pay a little more/go through some dedicated channels compared to actual residents

In “It’s complicated” news it has probably never been easier to successfully find and rent an apartment in Japan as a foreigner; it may actually be getting harder to get a phone if one doesn’t have a straightforward mid-term++ immigration status. (But easier to get a SIM.)

Replying to @patio11 @SachaGreif and
If you’re a digital nomad and you walk into a SoftBank and say “I’d like to buy a cell phone” in English, you’re going to have a rough time and the staff will not be super enthusiastic about explaining it in English. If you have foreign registration card, you walk out with phone.

Japan is better for digital nomads to hail from than hove to. Adventure abroad, recover in Tokyo.
