I feel like there was a brief moment in 2012 where you could reasonably Heroku up a Rails app and have something at an Internet-accessible URL in under five minutes... and then we lost that technology. It makes me feel really bad for learners and dabblers (read: tomorrow’s devs).https://twitter.com/vboykis/status/1019630680009998338 …

I don't think you're thinking at a high enough level -- it shouldn't be required to dev at all these days. Just wire some lego blocks together, configure WordPress and plugins, or similar.

Check out Netlify... basically a great UX over other platforms. 6 x CDN providers, NS1 for DNS, AWS Lambda for Functions, LetsEncrypt for certs and its own identity and auth... really quick and easy to build something scalable

But heroku still work that way?

I think this comes from a gravitational attraction toward satisfying the needs of users who pay. The changes, over time, create a barrier to non-payers (i.e., beginners).

Totally agree, it's all fine until you scale or your venture is limited on funding/community based. The pay per feature/user world is still a but frustrating in that respect. Hard to account and cost.

I'm hopeful a lot of this will ossify into convention/knowledge, at least that way there can be a "standard way of doing things" we can teach/document. What's so damaging is how much we reinvent, CONSTANTLY, in search of doing things 0.5% better.

The trick is to use a tool that solves the problems you have, not one that solves problems you don't have. Too many projects are derailed by trying to use tools that are beyond the complexity the development team can handle in addition to the project itself.
