. @matt_levine on a very widespread moral intuition about the markets: https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-07-12/a-speed-race-for-soybeans … Amusingly, it is in many people's interest to sell unsophisticated investors on the notion that they're only a little work from outperforming sophisticated investors.pic.twitter.com/oJLFGhvBUn

"Yep, ignore the fact that hedge funds very literally do automated satellite surveillance of WalMart shopping carts to estimate their earnings before the quarterlies come out. You, too, can watch CNBC and noodle your way to superior-to-market returns!"

s/shopping carts/parking lots/ ; sometimes the brain-finger connection doesn't work nearly as well as I wish it would.

(The part a few paragraphs after the bit I excerpted is one of the core, penetrating insights about the nature of markets and the economy that makes that newsletter the best thing in its field, incidentally. Come for the insight, stay for the comedy!)

It also sadly do not point to a single solution to the problem of the trader being left to long term move only. Even if to me it has eerilie close aspects to the problem of human monitoring highly automated tasks (see autopilot...)

There’s a whole system around those feeds. Suppliers like NewsEdge have different pricing tiers based on delay/real-time and physical distance to data sources matter. The release of info is regulated. FWIW on the web does seem a lot more accessible.

This whole “society rewards traders for their social impact and good” conceit is a little absurd. Also, isn’t deep exp soybean trader working for a company? Does it matter if they make money on the “dumb” trades or a computer did?

Do we really need to worry about traders not making enough money?

I think a lot of “smart guy beats market” comes from Warren Buffett, and his strategy is all about deep research and long-term investing...not exactly watch CNBC and/or compete w HFT.
