I think people are insufficiently amazed at credit cards. You can walk into a store in a country you’ve been to, pull out a piece of plastic they’ve never seen before, and walk out with basically anything, in seconds, with almost no words exchanged.

AND it's cheap enough that issuers will further incentivize high-value customers with additional rewards in the form of flights, hotels, and cash back for choosing to use their piece of plastic.

Those costs are not entirely priced in. At least not into the fees. They are, more often than not, externalized onto merchants, especially online. Under the guise of identity theft, as if the merchant was a victim of fraud, and not the system who told him the transaction was ok.
