Twitter unfailingly gives me a timeline of 20% posts I want to see and 80% posts that I do not, and the cynic in me says that there has been a meeting about this, and the meeting might not have explicitly said "Triggering a stress response increases engagement numbers" but, well.

To accurately describe the experience I don't want from Twitter is to invite the experience I don't want from Twitter, but engagement for the engagement god, cortisol for the cortisol throne.

The ‘turn off retweets’ feature used to help this, you only saw what people you followed were writing, not what they were parroting. But now twitter shows you what people you follow have merely ‘liked’, which is stuff that’s usually even more bothersome.

Muting triggering words and names (like "Trump") or the annoying meme of the week ("By age 35") makes Twitter usable again.

It's because of this that I have several Twitter lists of people who I consider a high priority, and I check those lists instead of timeline as they are presented in Chronological order and no algorithmic selection.

I use Twitter chronologically only, reading only a list of people I follow. Since users don’t pay for Twitter, Twitter’s incentives are not aligned with its users’. The algorithms aren’t going to be optimized for you, but against you.

I've read in an article somewhere that Facebook did this to trigger dopamine responses on the good posts. Never to high, keep you craving for more, intertwine with bad post so the good posts are a pleasant surprise. Happy scrolling!
