YC asking for ways to improve the experience of working early at a startup ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17286939 … ) has a lot of people asking "Wait, are rumors of engineers at AppAmaGooFaceSoft predictably getting $400k packages true?" Yes. Yes, they absolutely are.

Each of these companies has a career ladder. Substantially all employees who have been at them can quote the ladder by heart. They're designed to be roughly analogous with each other because a major purpose of the ladder is convincing engineers at counterparts to move.

There exists a point on the engineering career ladder where, up until that level, you are socially guaranteed of promotions contingent on continuing to execute in a worksmanlike fashion. Above that, it is usual combination of delivering value + non-trivial political games.

The "If you are not -- literally -- fired for incompetence, we will -- with the inevitability of a public school system offering retirement -- advance you to this level" terminal offering is +/- $400k. Tens of thousands of engineers have this package.

"Does that take like 30 years of experience?" In my conversations with people it's closer to 5~7 years served at AppAmaGooBookSoft but, you know, variance is a thing.

I feel like I have to chime in on this topic every 6 months because every time, every single time, this comes up, a lot of folks in less great situations say (out of ignorance and/or sour grapes) "There is no way that that could actually be a thing!"

And the folks at AppAmaGooBookSoft exercise a skill which is drilled into you early and pointedly say nothing. Some times, they like a tweet from one of the outside-the-company folks saying the obviously true and uncontroversial thing about their career ladder.

This thread is very true, however I want to point out that the median pay at these companies is closer to $250k, and a large part of why it skews lower is that the average time spent working at any one of these companies is <2 years.

The reasons they stay quiet are because 1/ as evidenced in these threads, people get jealous and angry, 2/ it doesn’t benefit them to have more competition, 3/ public knowledge about techie salaries would drive more negative attitudes

There’s really no upside for an individual to voice this unless they are invested in tilting the labor market, which employers are. They also have to balance the market dynamics to not create more competition among themselves.

Do you think this sustainable as employment growth slows? Will employees hired today have same progression as those hired 5 years ago? GlassDoor send to say entry comp is low six figures.

Total compensation for a new grad is $150~200k. Glass door quotes salaries, not total compensation. Most of the quoted $400k figure is stock and may include some of the recent, ridiculous appreciation which shares at these companies have enjoyed.

I see your point. I absolutely believe the ladder exists at the levels you cite. I think, as Jeff’s poll indicates, it’s a really small piece of a fairly big industry. One requires exceptional talent and circumstances to have just a view of the ladder
